If you're the person who signs purchase orders for fleet vehicles, here's the conclusion I reached after five years and roughly 240 orders: the cheapest part is almost never the cheapest part. In my experience, buying OEM-grade components like Dayco parts saved our company about 30% in annual maintenance costs compared to when we chased bottom-dollar pricing. Labor, downtime, towing, and rework—not the unit price—are where your real money goes. It took me three years, two tow bills, and one very expensive timing belt to understand the difference between a price and a cost.

The example that permanently changed my approach was a timing belt. We spec'd the Dayco 95298 timing belt for our 2015 Econoline vans. A "compatible" aftermarket belt from another supplier was $28 cheaper per kit. It seemed like a no-brainer. That belt failed at roughly 41,000 miles instead of the 90,000-plus we expected. I'm not going to pretend that buying a quality head gasket prevents all failures. Maintenance habits matter more: coolant flushes on schedule, monitoring operating temperature, and fixing small coolant leaks before they become big ones. But in my experience, quality gaskets and proper installation are the difference between a $500 repair and a $4,000 one. That's also why I now pay attention to how parts are manufactured rather than just what brand name is on the box. We towed all three trucks roughly 30 miles to our shop, thawed them in the heated bay, replaced the filters, and dosed the tanks with anti-gel treatment. Total bill: $2,368, including towing. The budget filters cost $18 each. Winter-rated filters from a quality brand cost $42 each. I think about that $2,368 every time someone questions a $42 filter.
We now replace fuel filters before Thanksgiving every year and carry two spares in each truck's toolbox. Zero gelling issues since, even during the February 2025 cold snap that froze a lot of other local fleets.
Alternator cable to battery: where cheap parts hide
Electrical components taught me a different lesson. We bought an off-brand alternator cable to battery for a 2018 F-250. It was $14 versus $49 for a quality cable. The wire gauge looked identical, so the $35 difference felt like pure margin.
In reality, the cheap cable had poorly crimped terminals and excessive voltage drop. Over four months, it cooked a battery and damaged the alternator. Replacement parts and labor came to $890. The $35 "savings" cost us about 25 times that. You can't see corrosion inside a cable jacket, and you can't inspect a crimp without destroying it. That's exactly why cheap electrical parts are a false economy. In my experience, this is probably the most common hidden failure in fleet maintenance.

Our most recent reminder was a Dayco accessory drive belt idler pulley on one of the shop trucks. The driver mentioned a squeal at startup—the kind of noise that makes people roll their eyes and keep driving. By the time we got it into the shop, the pulley bearing had enough play to compromise the serpentine belt, and the belt had started to fray.
If that pulley had seized out on a job site—which happens to more fleet vehicles than most buyers realize—it would have thrown the belt, cut alternator output and power steering simultaneously, and stranded the driver. Replacing the pulley and belt together takes about an hour in the shop. The failure costs a tow truck, a missed day of billable work, and a very unhappy operations manager.
Our policy now is to replace belt and idler pulley together on every truck at 60,000 miles, before they start making noise. It's cheap insurance, and it's the kind of proactive decision that keeps fleet maintenance out of the emergency column.
When budget parts are actually fine
I don't want to sound like a parts snob. To be fair, there are components that don't justify premium pricing: wiper blades, cabin air filters, trim pieces, or parts for a vehicle that's being sold within six months. If the failure mode is an inconvenience rather than a breakdown, the budget option is probably fine. I still buy cheap wiper blades by the case and nobody has ever suffered for it.
But for anything that involves labor hours, safety, or a tow truck—belts, pulleys, fuel systems, electrical components, gaskets—I buy quality first. This sometimes means a higher approval amount on the purchase order. Our finance manager questioned it at first, and honestly, I don't blame her. She'd been burned before by suppliers who charged premium prices and delivered mediocre products. The numbers, though, eventually settled the argument.
The comparison that settled it
When I compared Q1 2023, when we were using mostly budget parts, with Q1 2025, after we switched to Dayco and OEM-grade components, the pattern was unambiguous: failure-related towing dropped from 14 events to 3, and unscheduled maintenance hours fell by half. Total parts spend stayed roughly the same year over year—premium parts cost more upfront, but we bought fewer replacement parts and spent significantly less on labor.
It took me three years and about 240 orders to understand that vendor relationships and part quality matter more than the price on the invoice. Seeing those two quarters side by side is what made it click. If you're making the same mistake I made—comparing only unit prices—start tracking total cost per vehicle per year.
