The useful question is not 'should I replace the catalytic converter?' The useful question is whether the converter is actually bad. A P0420 or P0430 code means catalyst efficiency is below the expected threshold. It does not tell you whether the converter is at fault, an oxygen sensor is slow, the exhaust is leaking, or a misfire has been sending raw fuel into the catalyst.

Check for misfire codes, inspect the exhaust welds, and watch the oxygen sensor readings before ordering a converter. I have seen a shop replace two oxygen sensors plus a converter before finding a cracked weld. Thirty minutes of diagnosis would have saved most of that bill.

5. Understand the Automatic Headlight Symbol Before You Trust It
