A Friday Rush Job: Alternator Check, Dayco Belts, and a Clogged Catalytic Converter

It was 4:12 on a Friday afternoon in March 2024 when the call came in. I had my keys in one hand and a coat in the other. A ranch manager I've worked with for years said he needed two machines ready by Monday morning: a work truck with a charging system warning and a utility vehicle that wouldn't pull a load past half throttle.

I've done more rush jobs than I can count—200-something in the last eight years, including same-day turnarounds for clients who had no backup plan. So I've learned to treat every panic call the same way: verify before ordering expensive parts.

The first mistake was trusting the alternator check

The truck's owner had already been to a parts store. Their alternator check said the alternator was bad, so he bought a remanufactured alternator and installed it himself. The battery light was still on, and the dash voltage read under 12.

In my role coordinating these repairs, that's the moment I slow down. I did my own alternator check at the battery: 12.6V at rest, then 13.0V when the engine started. That told me the alternator was trying to charge. But when I switched on the headlights and blower, the number dropped to 11.9V. A good alternator should hold around 14V at 2,000 RPM.

Then I looked at the belt. It was oil-soaked and glazed, and the tensioner arm was moving more than it should. Oil had gotten onto the drive belt from a slow engine leak, and the belt was sliding on the alternator pulley under load. That can make a perfectly good alternator look dead.

The fix was simple: I grabbed the Dayco serpentine belt 5040353 from the shelf, replaced the worn tensioner, cleaned the oil off the pulleys, and did the same alternator check again. This time it held 14.2V with the headlights on. The remanufactured alternator wasn't defective; it just wasn't being spun hard enough.

The utility vehicle led me to a Peerless differential warning

The second machine was more interesting. The owner said it felt like the drive belt was slipping. Another mechanic had already told him that the Peerless differential was starting to seize, and a rebuild would cost more than the machine was worth.

I don't ignore that. A locked Peerless differential can create exactly the same symptom: engine revs, machine barely moves, and the belt gets hot and glazed. But before I tore into the differential, I pulled the belt cover and looked at the belt. It had heat cracks, and the top surface was polished like a tire that had been spinning on ice.

I also checked the fluid in that Peerless differential. It was clean, with no metal flakes and no burnt smell. The numbers pointed at the belt, not the differential. I carry Dayco ATV drive belts for these machines because they handle heat better than the cheap alternatives under sustained load. The new belt fixed most of the low-speed issue, but not all of it. The machine still felt flat when it reached working RPM.

“Can you clean out a catalytic converter?”

The flat spot under load made me check exhaust pressure. I removed the upstream oxygen sensor and put a backpressure gauge in its place. At idle it read 2.9 psi; at 4,000 RPM it went past 8 psi. That's too much. The catalytic converter was partially blocked.

That's when the owner asked the exact question I hear all the time: “Can you clean out a catalytic converter?”

Yes, you can clean out a catalytic converter, but you can't clean away physical failure. If the ceramic substrate has melted or broken, no cleaner in a bottle will fix it. In this case the substrate was intact and the catalyst was coated with carbon from an overly rich idle mixture. So I used a catalytic converter cleaner, followed the label's soak procedure, and then re-checked pressure. It dropped to about 1.4 psi at 4,000 RPM.

If I'd skipped the backpressure test and just thrown cleaner at it, I'd have wasted an afternoon. If I'd skipped the belt and only cleaned the converter, the failure would have come back. Both fixes were part of the same repair chain.

What I tell every customer in a hurry

First, an alternator check is only a snapshot. If the drive belt is old, oil-soaked, or worn, check it before spending money on an alternator. The original alternator in that truck was probably fine; the belt made it look bad.

Second, a machine that won't pull isn't always a transmission or differential failure. On a belt-driven utility vehicle, start with the belt and end with a load test. A fresh Dayco ATV drive belt is much cheaper than a differential rebuild, and if you pick the right one it will do its job without drama.

Third, “can you clean out a catalytic converter?” should be answered with data, not hope. Do a backpressure test first. Clean only if the substrate is sound; replace it if it isn't. And always fix the cause—whether it's an injector, a sensor, or an alternator problem—before cleaning or replacing the converter.

That Friday ended at 8:40 PM. Both machines were ready Monday morning. The real lesson wasn't about any single part; it was about not letting a deadline push me past the diagnosis. When time is short, the temptation is to throw parts at a machine. The faster I slow down, the sooner I actually solve it.
